Parents

We provide support to parents.

Many parents need their own support system as their child becomes an autonomous young adult. A little guidance and coaching for parents can help young adults effectively separate and take full ownership of their choices.

We offer both teleclasses and coaching for parents who want direct, honest, and non-judgmental support.

Bumpy Start to a College Experience

"Our family is so fortunate to have found College Excel. We were looking for a more supportive environment following our son's "bumpy" first year away at college.

We have learned through this past year that many young adults do not have the maturity to handle the college experience. Our son is one of those individuals. College Excel has been the bridge for our son's continued journey into adulthood.

The entire College Excel coaching staff has been there to work with our son and look at both his strengths and weaknesses. The program allows each student to make their own decisions as they learn from their mistakes and celebrate their successes.

The staff is made up of highly skilled and compassionate individuals. These coaches have the expertise to guide and support, while allowing each student to realize their full potential as they navigate through the challenges that come with everyday life.

College Excel has provided a real world experience that has helped our son to truly appreciate his gifts as he continues his path to reach his goals and achieve his dreams."

Parent Teleclasses

Parent Teleclasses take place in the fall, winter and spring quarters across four 50-minute phone sessions.

The classes provide parents with the information and skills to support their college student, including:
• The legal, physical and emotional changes confronting young adults
• What your role is now
• How to surrender control and gain influence
• How to communicate effectively with your young adult
• What and what not to support emotionally and financially
• Effective contracts for the young adult: how to write and enforce them
• Separating your needs from theirs: keeping "family time" alive

Other benefits include:
• Education on creating and practicing healthy boundaries
• Education on family roles and their influence on the family system
• Training on building an open family communication system
• Support in holding yourselves and your young adult accountable
• Education on the art of negotiation with young adults
• Insight into the world of young adults
• Intervention techniques for difficult young adults
• Support to keep parents focused, motivated and moving forward

Participation in our parent teleclasses is strongly recommended. They're offered at no additional cost, except any long-distance phone charges, to the parents of students enrolled in College Excel.

Parent Coaching

Parent Coaching is conducted over the phone, with each call usually lasting 40-50 minutes. Each parent, or set of parents, is assigned their own coach.

Our goal is to develop an alliance with parents by balancing warmth and professionalism with respect for their values and strengths.  As the coaching relationship develops, we'll help them depersonalize their roles, let go of any guilt they may be harboring, and gain the confidence and skills to parent effectively and lovingly, even in difficult situations.

To enroll in Parent Coaching, parents must have completed

a parent teleclass.

All parents who have a student enrolled in College Excel receive 4 parent-coaching sessions at no additional cost. Parents who want to continue receiving this service past the fourth session will be charged per session at a rate of $125.

Parent Communication Policy

One thing to keep in mind, we do not provide parents with student updates for the following very specific reasons:

  • It's against the law for us to release information once your son or daughter is 18 or older without their written consent.

  • It's difficult for us to establish a trusting relationship if your son or daughter thinks we're in regular contact with you and talking about them.

  • It can create what we call "unhealthy triangulation," where the young adult and their parents indirectly relate their feelings about each other through us.

  • We want to teach you and your son or daughter to speak directly and relate your feelings, wants and needs.

Parents may request a conference call with a coach as long as their son or daughter is included in the call.
